Baptisms

As Christians, we believe that there are two beginnings in life. The first beginning is the miracle of birth. Life is a gift from God and though we claim to understand its process, it is nevertheless, a great miracle.

The second beginning is Holy Baptism. When we baptize, we fulfill Jesus' command, "Go therefore... baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit." In the waters of baptism, and by God's Holy Word, we begin our faith journey.

Martin Luther spoke quite clearly that the "first pastor to your child" is you, the parent(s). Your faithful example is a powerful witness to the reality of God's love in the world and your child's life in Christ.

However, the good news is that you don't do this alone! In the service of baptism, your child's baptismal sponsors pledge to support you in this endeavor. Additionally, First Lutheran Church supports you by offering a comprehensive program of Christian education as your child grows older. This includes Sunday School and confirmation instruction leading to the day of Confirmation, now called Affirmation of Baptism.

As well, we want to support you as parents by providing opportunities for you to grow in your parenting skills and your own relationship with God.

Baptisms typically occur during our worship services - only under extraordinary circumstances do we perform "private baptism." To schedule a baptism, please contact the church office.
